New Class in Fall 2012

The Burlingame Space, in SW Portland, is now the home of the Burlingame
Vocal School of Jazz. BVSJ provides an opportunity for vocalists from the Portland metro area to sing in 4 part Jazz ensemble.

Singers can be any age and should have a minium of 2 years of musical experience. There is wide variety of meanings for "musical experience." You should fit in well if you have done any of the following: choir, singing in a Jazz combo, singing in a pop band, played piano or another instrument, can read music.

Classes are held once a week leading up to a performance at the end
of each session. Most performances will be shared with the Burlingame Symphonic
Band and a special guest artist or group.

Classes are upbeat and fun for the students,
while covering important topics such as tone production, sight-singing,
scatting/improvistaion, key studies and skills specific to the voice.

Program Director: Ben Medler
Ben Medler is a featured vocalist (& trombonist) in the Shanghai Woolies and
an active multi-instrumental musician raised in the classical music tradition in
both choir and band settings. Medler brings the experience of conducting
symphonic bands at Wilson High School for 7 years. In addition, he has 11
years with students of all ages in the Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra
and at Portland State Univeristy.

Performance: November 18 at Portland State University, Lincoln Hall rm 75 2pm
with THE BIG HORN BRASS & the Burlingame Symphonic Band

AUDITIONING: An audition or placement is required to join. Contact us to schedule the audition or discuss placement. A recommendation from a music director or private music teacher may bypass an audition. The idea is to make sure that singers are on a similar level and that every student is challenged at an appropriate pace.
